Oral sex unsafe, causes throat cancer--study

Bonnie Halpern-Felsher professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, stated, “Adolescents don’t think oral sex is something to worry about. They view it as a way to have intimacy without having sex.”

HPV linked cancer cases rising
Cancers of the mouth are usually caused by smoking or drinking, but the latest data of throat cancer suggests that 64 percent cancers were caused by contraction of HPV infection.

For instance, in the United States the oral cancer cases linked to HPV infection have increased two-folds in the last 20 years.

Even in Britain, the cases of oropharynx cancers have risen, according to the study presented by Halpern-Felsher and other researchers at the American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Washington DC.

“What is most strongly linked to oral HPV infection is the number of sexual partners someone has had in their lifetimes, in particular the number of individuals on whom they have performed oral sex.”--Professor Maura Gillison, Ohio State University in Columbus

A research conducted last year by Johns Hopkins University on 300 people showed that those who had more than six sex partners were nine times more likely to contract cancers of the mouth.

Further, people who had already got oral HPV infection were 32 times more likely to have cancer.
According to Oral Cancer Foundation, 37,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer every year in the United States.

More the sex partners, higher the risk
According to scientists, when people indulge in unprotected sex, human papilloma virus gets transmitted, thus leading to lethal oral cancers.

“What is most strongly linked to oral HPV infection is the number of sexual partners someone has had in their lifetimes, in particular the number of individuals on whom they have performed oral sex,” stated Professor Maura Gillison of Ohio State University in Columbus.

“The higher the number of partners that you’ve had, the greater the odds that you’d have an oral infection,” she added.

Vaccination recommended
In order to combat the disease, doctors are suggesting that boys and girls need to be vaccinated.
Since 2008, the girls, aged 12 and 13, have been vaccinated at schools to curb the spread of virus.
The vaccines currently available are Gardasil and Cervarix, but they protect against only a few of the HPV strains.

“But while it’s reasonable to assume that HPV vaccination in girls and boys would protect against these cancers, there is as yet no evidence as to whether the current HPV vaccines are effective at preventing them.”

New rules by Apple annoy app developers

The various developers making apps for Apple have claimed that the new rules regarding subscription are so puzzling it is almost impossible to make an app confirming to the new rules. The latest criticism comes after some publishers also expressed their anguish over these rules regarding subscription-based content.

Arc90, which has developed the Readability Web service, has severely criticized Apple for rejecting its native iOS client on the grounds that it does not confirm to the new subscription rules.

Developers unhappy with new terms
Another developer, Keynote Productions, which makes TinyGrab, is not even going to complete its under-development app.

Arc90’s Readability service reformats Web pages into easy to read formats and strips out ads and other content not related to the main text.

Arc90’s Readability service has a unique model, as it allows readers to pay on per-article-basis, and giving Apple a cut of 30 percent would mean that the company would have to either give up its own share or settle new terms with the publishers.

Arc90 has launched a Web-based subscription service in which 70 percent of the revenue goes to the publisher whose content the user reads and 30 percent goes to the company, apparently for the money lost as ad revenue.

Apple rejected the app on the ground that it is presenting a paid service without devising any means to pay for the service within the app itself.

Rich Ziade of the Arc90 wrote an open letter to Apple after it received the rejection letter from Apple. In the letter, Ziade claimed that Apple’s language of its rules include “functionality and services” besides just the apps offering content.

Ziade claimed, “If we implemented In App purchasing, your 30 percent cut drastically undermines a key premise of how Readability works.”

Zaide’s complaint is, however, somewhat insincere, as it is keeping 30 percent for itself for its service of removing ads and reformatting web pages.

Readability service has a unique model, as it allows readers to pay on per-article-basis, and giving Apple a cut of 30 percent would mean that the company would have to either give up its own share or settle new terms with the publishers.

Several other developers face the same problems
Similarly, TinyGrab has also decided that it will not offer a native iOS client for the “social screenshot sharing” service.

Project manager Chris Layton said in his blog post that the company would violate several of the new rules regarding the app purchases.

Layton wrote, “Apple would now like a slice of our pie, which is fair enough, We’re more than willing to give Apple a cut of the sales that they assist in, but we can’t- they simply won’t let us.”

As the new rules by Apple have caught most of the developers unawares, some kind of annoyance is understandable. If Apple decides to continue with its demand for a 30 percent cut in all the revenue generated by iOS apps, the developers will have to reframe their business plans keeping this factor in mind.

Google to make search results more social network-friendly

Search engine

In its move to enhance user experience, Google Inc. has decided to expand its search engine by enabling users to find more personalized results shared on social networking sites.

The Mountain View, California based search giant has once again proved its innovative potential, this time by deciding to let its search engine become a bit more social: letting users find more personalized results.

This enhanced feature, which would only need users to be registered on a social networking website and a functional Google account.

More news
It is not the first time that the users will be able to view results from social networking websites.

However, it would be the first time such results would show up among the top results, unlike previous instances when they would show up at the bottom of the page or could be accessed using the “Social” filter in left-hand side column of the results page.

Despite widespread expansion of Google’s social search, the changes would not have any Facebook “Like” activity even if the Facebook page is linked with the social profile.

The feature would require users to be signed into their Google account. Following that, they would need to link their Google account to all relevant social networking sites from which they prefer to find results.
The feature works by showing link(s) containing relevant information among the top results. The link from a social networking website on which it may have been shared, would contain a small photo along with information on the person who shared the link.

The feature has received widespread favorable response. Though it is possible to find information tailored to one’s needs on the internet, it is indeed favorable finding the same from an online contact.

Impact on page ranking
According to Product Management Director of Search, Mike Cassidy, Google would in some cases annotate results with a social search indicator.

The traditional ranking algorithm of Google would determine where a listing could appear. The listing would then only be enhanced to reflect any social element associated with any result.

In other cases, page ranking would be boosted by the addition of a social element, and those results associated with a social element would get boosted compared with a “normal” one.

Facebook “Likes” not included
Surprisingly, Twitter “Likes” would be surrogates for Facebook “Likes” for the time being.

Despite widespread expansion of Google’s social search, the changes would not have any Facebook “Like” activity even if the Facebook page is linked with the social profile. Mike Cassidy said, “This is just the beginning, and we’re going to be doing much more to improve the comprehensiveness of Google Social Search.”

Knee replacement patients function well after 20 years--study

Here is some heartening news for all those who keep enduring pain and put off total knee replacements (TKR) amid concerns that the quality of the result and the amount of function in the reconstructed knee decreases over time.

According to a new study, patients with artificial knees may exhibit some age related declines but maintain an active lifestyle over a long term, nearly another 20 years after their surgery.

Total knee replacement (TKR), also referred to as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure where worn, diseased, or damaged surfaces of a knee joint are removed and replaced with artificial surfaces.

Total Knee replacement
The basic aim of the procedure is to help individuals return back to normal activities of daily living and provide them with painless and unlimited standing, sitting and walking capabilities.

Lead researcher of the study, Dr John Meding, an orthopedic surgeon at the Center for Hips and Knee Surgery at St. Frances Hospital Mooresville, in Mooresville, Ind. stated: "The whole point of having a total joint replacement is to maintain a functional knee that allows patients to maintain a good deal of activity for a long time. This shows it lasts 20 years or more after the [operation]."

He added: "If you get a good knee and treat it well, and are blessed to live long enough, even after 20 years you can maintain this level of activity.”The study found that with the exception of two patients all could use stairs without a banister and only three were confined to the house.

Functional capacity of patients after TKR assessed
In a bid to assess the patient's functionality after TKR, the researchers studied the outcome of the procedure in 1,757 patients who had the surgery at St. Frances between 1975 and 1989.

All had undergone a procedure known as primary cruciate-retaining surgery.

Among them, a total of 128 patients with an average age 82 were still living after their 20-year follow-up.

It was noted that 82 percent of these patients had osteoarthritis and 73 percent were female.

The study subjects were evaluated for knee flexibility, walking distance, ability to climb stairs and their level of pain.

Revelations of the study
The study found that with the exception of two patients all could use stairs without a banister and only three were confined to the house.

In addition, 95 patients could walk at least five blocks, while 82 reported unlimited walking ability. The study also found that 81 were pain free.

Additionally, 22 patients took part in sports such as jogging, volleyball and tennis, some also with both knees replaced.

Mending concluded: "These findings definitely add to the conversation with patients considering surgery. If a patient actually lives that long, a well-functioning TKR may help allow them to maintain a remarkable functional capacity and activity level not just for five or 10 years but for 20 years and beyond.

"This research refutes any perception that the importance of a well-functioning TKR diminishes over time because of an overall declining functional status. Elderly people are using their surgically replaced knees for fairly active lifestyles many years after surgery."

The findings of the study will be presented this week at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in San Diego.

Red wine effective in breast cancer treatment--study

Women who are undergoing breast cancer treatment should drink a glass of wine everyday, as it increases the drug's ability to fight cancer, a new study finds.
Red wine effective in breast cancer

The research published in the journal 'Cancer Letters,' states that resveratrol, an ingredient found in red wine, boosts the success rate of cancer treatment.

According to the researchers from Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute, a tumor usually becomes resistant to effects of the drug after a certain period of time, but combining resveratrol with cancer drug rapamycin helps women respond better to treatment.

“If these observations hold true in the clinic setting, then enjoying a glass of red wine or eating a bowl of boiled peanuts – which has a higher resveratrol content than red wine – before rapamycin treatment for cancer might be a prudent approach."-- Dr Charis Eng, lead study author

Resveratrol- rapamycin suppresses cancer cell growth
To reach the findings, a team of researchers led by Dr Charis Eng, studied the effect of resveratrol in combination with drug rapamycin on cancer cells.

In clinical trials, the researchers found that resveratrol suppressed the growth of cancer cells that were resistant to drug.

In fact, resveratrol was twice as effective in combating the growth of cancer cells, than rapamycin alone. Resveratrol blocks the way oestrogen works with DNA in the body of woman with breast cancer.

Dr. Eng stated, “Rapamycin has been used in clinical trials as a cancer treatment. Unfortunately, after a while, the cancer cells develop resistance to rapamycin.”

"Our findings show that resveratrol seems to mitigate rapamycin-induced drug resistance in breast cancers, at least in the laboratory.

"If these observations hold true in the clinic setting, then enjoying a glass of red wine or eating a bowl of boiled peanuts – which has a higher resveratrol content than red wine – before rapamycin treatment for cancer might be a prudent approach" he added.

Rapamycin, also called sirolimus, is an immunosuppressant drug that is used to prevent transplant rejection. It is widely used for its anti-tumor properties.

About resveratrol
Resveratrol is a plant antibiotic that is found in red grapes, raspberries, cranberries and peanuts.
Tests have proved that apart from acting as an anti-cancer agent, resveratrol is also effective in treating Alzheimers, and spinal cord injuries.

Further, it lowers blood sugar, increases cardiovascular function, fights fungal and bacterial infections, removes brain plague, offers radiation exposure protection and lengthens the overall life span.

Nokia to switch to Windows Phone 7

With the meteoric rise of Google Android devices and Apple's iPhone, Nokia had been considering a strategic move to reposition itself as the market leader in the smartphones segment.
The Finnish giant had been seeing a downward spiral since 2007 when the first iPhone hit the market and Google announced Android. That was a time when Nokia's market share in the smartphones segment was nearly 50 percent.
By the fourth quarter of 2010, the market share of the Finnish giant had fallen to an unbelievable 30.8 percent, while Apple had increased its market share to 16 percent.
With the adoption of Windows Phone 7, Nokia now has a powerful weapon up its sleeve to compete with Android and iPhone devices.
Android-based smartphones have seen an explosive growth since 2007, with more than 300,000 phones getting activated everyday, according to a Google spokesman.
Nokia had been considering a move to join hands with Android but backed out because it did not want to “play in a commodity market”. Associating with Android would also have given Google too much of revenue for the services.
Nokia Apps to integrate into Windows Phone 7
Microsoft is now working with Nokia to help the Finnish giant come out with its first Windows Phone 7 device. The two companies are also in talks with chip manufacturers to decide on the best chips and processors that would be suitable for such phones.
Nokia Maps will use Microsoft's Bing search engine for its search capabilities and all Nokia apps and content store will be integrated with the Windows Phone 7 platform.
Market shares of Research In Motion, makers of Blackberry, have dwindled to the point of being insignificant, with most experts now calling Nokia, Android and Windows Phone the “big three”.
The partnership between Nokia and Microsoft will see Nokia contribute its hardware support and language design and bring out Windows Phone 7 devices across a greater range of price points and market segments.
Symbian OS is likely to continue
Nokia, however, made it clear that it had no plans to abandon its Symbian OS any time soon. It said that it "expects to sell 150 million more Symbian devices in the years to come."
With the adoption of Windows Phone 7, Nokia now has a powerful weapon up its sleeve to compete with Android and iPhone devices. The familiarity and popularity of Windows 7 desktop operating system should make many consumers opt for a Windows Phone 7 device from Nokia, experts say.

400 fans with Super Bowl

400 fans with Super Bowl tickets denied seats

While 400 fans were denied seats, 850 were relocated to other parts of the Cowboys Stadium due to problems with the temporary seats.

The seats being built for the game were not ready and deemed unsafe. According to officials, the winter storm that hit Dallas delayed work on the temporary seats.
As a consequence, the 400 dejected fans had no option but to watch the game on monitors or standing-room platforms.

Apart from being the “guests of the NFL" at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis next year, the 400 displaced fans have received $2,400, triple the face value of the $800 tickets.

NFL apologizes
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called the situation a fiasco on their part. “Any time you put on an event of this magnitude, you have your challenges.”

“We apologize to those fans that were impacted. We are going to work with them and we are going to do better in the future. We will certainly do a thorough review and get to the bottom of why it all occurred, but we take full responsibility for that as putting on this game,” he added.

Compensating for the inconvenience caused, the NFL has promised these fans free tickets for the Super Bowl next year.

Apart from being the “guests of the NFL" at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis next year, the 400 displaced fans have received $2,400, triple the face value of the $800 tickets.

League spokesman Brian McCarthy, stated on his Twitter account, “The 400 fans w/out seats last nite went on field postgame, received free merchandise, food, beverage, $2,400, free SB46 tix.”

Super Bowl fans not convinced
Though the NFL has apologized to the displaced fans and refunded their tickets, many people are still not convinced. In fact, some have even taken to the micro-blogging site, Twitter, to vent their annoyance.

For instance, a Super Bowl fan named JonDelano tweeted, “If you spent $5,000 to fly to Dallas for SuperBowl and tickets voided, three times ticket price does not compensate.”

Likewise another person named 228bound stated, “NFL is terrible for their lack of the preparation to seat the fans who bought tickets but didnt have a seat during the superbowl 2011.”

Should You Merge Finances After Marriage?

Some people believe that merging money after marriage is the right thing to do. Many others stress on the importance of maintaining separate bank accounts. Read on to find out the pros and cons of merging money after marriage.

Here are some advantages of merging your finances after marriage:
Merge Finances after Marriage
Easy Money Management
Managing money becomes easy when it is all in one place. The couple can quickly get a clear idea of how much money is coming in and going out of the joint bank account every month.
Builds Trust
Willingly sharing financial details and responsibility with each other builds trust within the marriage. Merging finances shows the partner that you are committed and want to stick around for the long term.
Creates Partnership
When both partners take financial decisions together, they create a sense of real partnership within the marriage. Here couples create a common family budget, establish common financial goals and resolve to work their way out of a debt crisis together. This encourages real bonding within the marriage.
Disadvantages of Merging Money:
One Partner Gets Excluded
We do not live in an ideal world. Therefore, it is common for one partner to develop greater control over money matters over time.
Also, usually one partner is better at understanding money matters. The partner who earns more and is more money-wise can end up having the final say every time. The other spouse begins to feel left out of major financial decisions.
One Partner Develops Greater Control
The partner with aggressive personality traits might begin to exercise strict control over the family income. He/she might expect the other partner to seek approval before making even minor purchases. The other partner will find this demeaning.
Problems in Case Of Divorce
Splitting assets becomes a difficult and time consuming process should the couple ever decide to part ways.
Loss of Independence
It takes people years of hard work to become financially independent. Therefore, certain people do not want to give up this independence after walking down the aisle.
Informing the spouse about the intension to purchase a new pair of shoes, a video game, or furniture every time does not make sense to them.
Finally, whether to merge finances or not, is a personal decision. Each couple has a different relationship dynamics. What works for one marriage, will not necessarily work for another.
Therefore, each couple should make a choice that works best for their marriage. Relatives, friends and religious institutions need to refrain from interfering.
